Shades of brown, gold, and amber signifies November is here. The air is crisp, fireplaces are starting to come aglow, and we experience a sense of warmth and reflection. It's another month that encourages us to slow down, look inward, and lean on our connections. A gentle reminder of what truly matters.
November in the United States is connected to the celebration of Thanksgiving. A time when family and friends come together to share in food as they give thanks. What will you be thankful for this year? Maybe it's a supportive friend, a small personal victory, or simply the ability to gather together. Acknowledging our gratitude isn't just a pleasant thought; it's a proven practice that can boost our overall happiness and perspective.
Shining the Light on Mental Wellness
November is a crucial month for mental health awareness. As the days get noticeably shorter and we "fall back" on the clock, we must make a conscious effort to keep our spirits from falling back, too. We need to be aware of the changes and put practices in place to “not fall back”.
☀️Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
You may notice shifts in energy, mood, and sleep that make concentration a challenge. If you or someone you know is struggling, this might be more than just the "winter blues"; it might be a clinical mood disorder known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, “SAD” for short, and deserves attention.
Your SAD Tool Box: What can you add to your self-care routine this month? Consider things like a daily walk outdoors (even on a cloudy day), scheduling time with friends, or talking to a professional about light therapy or other coping strategies.

Movember: Health Beyond the Moustache
Have you seen more men suddenly sporting a 'stache? That's Movember, a movement that began in 2003 in Australia to bring awareness to men's mental and physical health. It focuses primarily on prostate and testicular cancer, as well as critical issues like suicide prevention. It's a fun, visible way to start serious, life-saving conversations.
What will you do? Will you grow a beard, donate, or simply start a dialogue about men's health this month?
💖 Nurturing Young Minds
Let's not overlook the importance of childhood mental health. The emotional and social development of infants and pre-schoolers are shaped by the caregivers in their lives. By supporting a caregiver or focusing on our youngest, we help children develop the fundamental skills needed to connect with the world. This foundational support is an investment in a healthier future for everyone.
Don’t Fall Back: A Call to Action
The clock change is a physical reminder that time is passing. Let's use it as a metaphor: Don't fall back into old habits that no longer serve you or your well-being. As Nina Simone so eloquently stated:
“You have got to learn to leave the table when love is no longer being served.”
This November, commit to a positive change.
Choose a Cause: Will you start a conversation around men’s health, donate to a children's mental health charity, or simply commit to better management of your own SAD symptoms?
As we navigate the beauty and the challenges of the season, let us commit to being more human, more warm, and more present for ourselves and our communities.
Be on the lookout for my upcoming Thanksgiving Day Blog.
